Freelance Writing Fees

Print & Online Publishers
Hire a freelance writer with experience in writing for magazines, newsletters, e-zines, and websites.

As a freelance writer, I understand that each publication has its own pay scale and policy regarding the rights of articles. That's why my fees for original and reprint articles are based on your publication's going freelance writer rates. I do, however, believe that the rights to the articles I write for your publication should coincide with the payment you provide and I am willing to work within your budget or negotiate fees and/or rights with you.

Eulogy Writer
Hire someone who understands the pain of grief and can weave your jumbled, emotion-filled words together to help you tell a heartfelt story. Click here for details and rates.

Ghostwritten Projects
Hire a freelance ghostwriter whose fees are low enough to fit into your budget but high enough to allow me to pay the bills. With a three-tier approach to freelance writing my fees can meet your budget despite our current economic crunch and/or your budget constraints. And the best part is that you get original content–high quality content–for your website, newsletters, or business materials.

All fees below are for "ALL RIGHTS", thus the "ghostwritten" heading above.

All fees are based on a per project basis: one web page is one project, one blog post is one project, one article is one project, one press release is one project, one tip sheet is one project, one report is one project, etc.

Tier One
Rewrites And Edits
You've written the content but you need someone to make coherent sense of it all. You want it polished so that it flows better and is free of typos/grammar flaws.

I take what you've already written, edit out content that doesn't need to be there (i.e. you're too close to the subject and got too wordy), move content around for better flow, and/or reword your existing material. I may even add in a new sentence or two, but I do not conduct any research or interviews.

In other words, I only tweak the material you've already written to make you sound more professional.

  • $25 for 1 - 500 words
  • $50 for 500 - 1,000 words
Tier Two
Partnership
You've gathered the research material, but don't want to write the actual content. Or the information is so common sense that I can write it with very little research and/or a quick email interview.

The information needed for projects in this area comes from one of four places:
  • basic "head" knowledge (a topic I already know about);
  • background information dug up with a quick search on the Internet;
  • your notes, company materials, and answers you provide to a few quick questions; and/or
  • a quick email interview to one (1) person in the industry.
In other words, you know exactly what you want and I know enough about the subject that I don't need to do any in-depth research or interviewing. You may also have some supporting documentation available to help complete the task.
  • $25 for 1 - 200 words
  • $40 for 201 - 400 words
  • $55 for 401 - 550 words
  • $75 for 551 - 750 words
  • $95 for 751 - 950 words
  • $125 for 951 - 1,200 words
  • 15 cents per word for anything over 1,201 words
I can also do 500 to 950 word Featured Q&A Interviews, like this one, for the low price of $55; provided the Q&A can take place via email. Phone or in-person interviews will cost more with price based on travel, time, and expenses.

Tier Three
Going Solo
You have a basic idea of what you want, you may even have some supporting material, but you need someone to do a lot more digging.

The information needed for projects in this area comes from several research and interview sources:
  • interpretation of company research and business materials;
  • answers you and/or your staff provide to in-depth question and answer segments;
  • background information dug up with an in-depth search on the Internet;
  • background information dug up through library sources; and/or
  • background information dug up through several Q&A interviews with both experts and users in the industry.
In other words, you have a general idea of what you want, but I must do the majority (if not all) of the preliminary legwork, plus write and edit the material.
  • $175 for 1 - 500 words
  • 45 cents per word for 501 - 1,500 words
  • 75 cents per word for 1,501 - 3,500 words
  • 1 dollar per word for anything over 3,501 words
Quick FAQS

Do You Write Sales or Ad Copy?
No. It takes a very special skill to write advertising copy and I am not trained in that area.

Do You Offer Edits?
Yes. I understand that some changes may be necessary to meet your needs and that tweaking content is inevitable; therefore, I offer two free edits with each project. I will provide additional edits for an additional fee.

Can You Tell More More About Your Fees?
Yes. For starters,
  • Fees are based upon word count, level of difficulty, and background research involved.
  • Payment is accepted in the form of checks, cashier's checks, and credit cards.
    If you send a business check, work on your project will not begin until the check clears the bank―which usually takes 5-10 days from time of deposit.
  • Commissions, ad revenue percentages, company stock, and other payment options are not accepted.
  • For projects under $300, 100% of payment is due up front and is non-refundable.
  • For projects over $300, 50% of the payment must be received before I work on any project.
    50% of the remaining balance is due after the first draft is turned in.
    The balance of the final payment is due before the completed project is turned over to you.
  • All payments are non-refundable. Refunds are not offered because the time I devote to a project is unrecoverable. However, I will work with you to make sure you are satisfied with the work I perform.
  • All fees are subject to change without notice.
Do You Offer Corresponding Photographs?
Yes. Photographs can be included with each project for an additional fee.

Why Should I Pay Your Rates When I Can Pay My Employee $10 An Hour?
That's a debate that has been going on for as long as freelancers have existed. Aside from the fact that I specialize in this field, the simple answer is that you don't pay your employee $10 hour.

When you hire an employee, you also pay employee taxes, employee health insurance premiums, and employee disability and accident insurance. On top of that, you contribute to their employee 401K plans and cover all the overhead costs.

Why Should I Pay Your Rates When I Can Pay Someone In Another Country Only $1 An Article?
Besides the fact that I have good grammar skills, that I know the English language, and that I am a good writer, I am also an American citizen and I cannot get by on $1 an article.

Is There Anything Else I Should Know About Working With You?
Yes, please review my billing, policies, and faqs. Also, my terms are flexible, provided pay coincides with rights given up and time involved in creating the work. Terms like:
  • frequency: daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly;
  • length: 100 words, 500 words, 1,000 words or more;
  • price: based upon your publication's set terms or my going rates;
  • sector or genre: written towards your publication's target audience;
  • style: essay, how-to, profiles, question and answer, or feature article; and
  • publication rights: one-time rights, all rights, reprint rights, language rights, or geographic rights.
